Pellets and slugs of precious metal

IAM Drijfhout offers pellets and slugs in various types of precious metals such as platinum, gold, palladium, and silver. We work with the purest precious metals to guarantee high quality. Various shapes and sizes are available.

For the pellets, common precious metal purities are:

  • Gold (Au) 99.99% Pellets
  • Platinum (Pt) Pellets 99.99%
  • Palladium (Pd) 99.99% Pellets
  • Silver (Ag) 99.99% Pellets

For the most demanding applications (and to optimally limit specific impurities), there is the option to specially request gold pellets with a purity of Au 99.999%.

Common dimensions of precious metal pellets are:

  • 3.18 x 3.18 mm (1/8”x1/8”)
  • 6.35 x 6.35 mm (1/4”x1/4”)
  • 6.35 x 12.7 mm (1/4”x1/2”)

For slugs/granules, the size of precious metal grains varies from tiny pieces barely visible to the naked eye to larger lumps.

Quality

The quality of a precious metal, such as its purity and composition, can vary greatly. To ensure that the required properties are present in a thin film process, it is necessary that the source material used is very pure.

Moreover, a precious metal like gold can be sensitive to splashing during evaporation, which can lead to defects in the deposited film. Therefore, it is very important to provide a high and consistent quality of precious metal.

Usage and properties

Pellets and slugs of precious metal are used in various industrial applications. They are widely used in evaporation processes (thin film deposition) in the production of wafers for (micro)chips, medical equipment, and other applications where precision and high purity are required.

The application of thin films, or thin layers of precious metal, is widely used by technology industries such as universities, cleanrooms/nanolabs, and research institutes.

  • Platinum (Pt) pellets and slugs – Platinum has a very high resistance to corrosion and is often used in high-temperature applications, such as catalysts and fuel cells. Due to its good conductivity and reflectivity, it is also used in electronic and optical applications.
  • Palladium (Pd) pellets and slugs – Palladium is commonly used in electronic, optical, and catalytic applications. It is known for its ability to absorb hydrogen, making it widely used in hydrogen storage and fuel cell applications.
  • Gold (Au) pellets and slugs – Gold offers excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion and is highly conductive. It is widely used in electronic and optical applications, e.g., as a thin film for circuits and sensors.
  • Silver (Ag) pellets and slugs – Silver, with its good conductivity and antimicrobial properties, is widely used for medical devices and in electronic and optical applications.

Recycling

Leftover pellets and slugs can be send to IAM Drijfhout for recyling, enabling the efficient and sustainable reuse of precious metal. For more information, please visit the recycling service page.
